Rajsamand Lake was built by Maharana Raj Singh between 1660–1676 AD as a famine-relief construction project, employing tens of thousands of workers from the drought-stricken region. The white marble embankment at its northern end — the Nauchoki (Nine Ghats) — is a masterpiece of Rajput architecture decorated with intricate floral carvings and the complete text of the Raj Prashasti inscription (the longest inscription in the world, covering 27 marble slabs and over 1,000 Sanskrit verses).

The 27-slab Raj Prashasti inscription records the history of the Mewar dynasty in 1,017 Sanskrit verses. Local boatmen offer gentle rowing excursions on the lake — recommended at dawn or dusk.
